The first missionary religious congregation for women in the history of the Church and the world is the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary founded in 1877 by BL. Mary of the Passion, now in the 139th year of its course.

Mary of the Passion loved to contemplate "the spirit of simplicity, poverty and sacrifice” in Francis. She integrated the charism into the rich Franciscan spirituality, underlining its two fundamental aspects: the spirit of exterior and interior poverty, and the spirit of minority. To be minor is to be an insignificant instrument in God’s hands, "a little nothing, offering oneself totally to the divine action "to be all things to all, "ready to serve in any situation, but equally ready to disappear when the good has been accomplished.” The unity of the charism finds greater depth and consolidation in the Franciscan way, which is that of the Gospel
