The first missionary religious congregation for women in the history of the Church and the world is the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary founded in 1877 by BL. Mary of the Passion, now in the 139th year of its course.

Franciscan in its essence.
Missionary in its services
Mary - like in its approach.

» Dedicated to universal mission

» Seek strength from the Eucharist

» And offer ourselves in challenging services

"This charism is lived in the fundamental attitude that was Mary’s… she offered her whole being in complete and loving disponibility, in faith and humble service, so that the Spirit might carry out the Father’s work in her. Const. Art.2, "Inspiration for our prayer life comes from Mary, who marveled at God’s gratuitous gift, listened attentively to the Word of God and kept it in her heart. She was open to the needs of others...” Const.Art.10

The Marian inspiration set a mark on Mary of the Passion’s spiritual life, and is reflected in the charism. Mary becomes the "special way” of her missionaries . To live one’s life under God’s gaze, empty of everything else, the Franciscan Missionary of Mary discovers, like Mary, the secret of living two aspects of her womanly being: the strong woman who gives herself, and at the same time a woman hidden in her contemplation, loving to live in obscurity, thus harmonizing courageous missionary action and deep communion with God in intense prayer.
