The first missionary religious congregation for women in the history of the Church and the world is the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary founded in 1877 by BL. Mary of the Passion, now in the 139th year of its course.

Blessed Maria Assunta (1878-1905)

Maria Assunta Pallota was born on 20th August 1878 in Force, in the region of the Marches in Italy. She shared the simple, poor life of hard work of her milieu and her family.
At the age of twenty she joined the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. On the 13th of February 1904, she made her final commitment to God and was sent to China as a missionary. There she died on the 7th of April 1905 as a victim of the epidemic, stricken with typhus while serving the poor orphans.
She was beatified on 7th November 1954 by Pope Pius XII Her liturgical feast is celebrated on 7th November. She is the patron of the religious with temporary commitment.
