In Memory

Sr. Teresa George (Clotilda)

In Loving Memory of Sr.Teresa George (Clotilda)

And I heard a voice from heaven saying: “Write this.  Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”  Blessed indeed says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their good deeds will follow them.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints Ps 116: 15

Sr.Teresa George, lovingly known by her religious name Sr.Clotilda, was born on 27th July in 1928 at Puthupally, Kerala as the youngest daughter of Mr.George and Mrs. Mariamma.  As a young girl Sr.Teresa George came to Chennai, stayed with her elder sister and completed her studies in St. Rephael’s  School.  She completed her mid-wifery course at Bellary.  Her association with the FMM sisters and the stories of St.Theresa of the Child Jesus and Blessed Maria Assunta inspired her young mind to embrace religious life.  The bishop of Bellary was instrumental in reaching her to St.Thomas Convent. She joined the Novitiate at Ketti- Nilgris in 1953.

Her loving, compassionate and generous heart had no boundaries and she extended her service to everyone in need.  Her youthful years were spent in the healing ministry, started in Nilgiris, continued in Mercy, Home Trichy, Leprosy hospital in Tuticorin, dispensary in Tanjore and finally in St.Thomas Convent.  Sr.Teresa George thus started her religious life and also went to her Heavenly reward from St.Thomas Convent, a place very dear to her.  Here in St.Thomas Convent, she used to assist our Nurse, Sr.Melita in the dispensary.  Her gentle healing hands and soothing words have assisted and supported many sick and senior sisters in their illness and last journey.

The secret of her joyful giving was the result of her prayer life.  She used to spend many hours in prayer, praying the Rosary and reading the Word of God.  She herself used to say “My prayer life sustained me through all these years”. She was a great missionary and actively engaged in Family Apostolate.  Sr.Teresa used to visit the families in the surrounding areas, preparing the children to receive the Sacraments, distributing Holy Communion to the sick, rectifying marriages and finding jobs for the poor boys and girls.   The poor approached her for all their needs and visited her regularly.  She became a “mother” most wanted by all.

She had a contagious smile for everything, special love for all her sisters especially for her superiors.   We admired her pleasant nature and her presence. She daily prayed for the various intentions of the Institute and the people. On 20th October she was admitted in the hospital as she was very ill.  Multiple organ failure and the constant dependence on oxygen, kept her in the ICU.  Owing to her deteriorating condition and her desire to be in the midst of her sisters, their chanting of hymns and prayers, she was brought home on Sunday and was given a constant supply of oxygen.

On Tuesday, October 31 around 7.40 a.m our dear Sr.Teresa George breathed her last in the presence of her sisters.  May she enjoy the celestial Joy and Happiness which she longed for. We believe that she is close to our Bl.Mother at the closing of the month of the Rosary and to celebrate the feast of All Saints in heaven.

Mother Theresa said “Death is nothing else but going home to God, the bond of love will be unbroken for all eternity.” Yes, dear Sr.Clotilda, our bond of love will continue because life is eternal and love is immortal.  Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.  You are loved beyond words and we will miss you.  We say a tearful Good bye.
