A Loving Tribute to Sr. Georgina Thomas VALIAPARAMBIL

Sr. Georgina Thomas was born on 21st February 1967 at Mudis, Tamil Nadu as the eldest daughter of Mr.V.V.Thomas and Mrs. Maria Carmali. She wrote in her autobiography that her family was a happy and united one.  They cared for one another and shared everything. The family originally from Vallarpadam in Kerala lived in Mudis Tea Estate in Tamil Nadu where there were people of different cultures, languages and religion which enabled her to adapt herself to people of different cultures and languages. As her family was deeply religious, her faith formation was well taken care of from early childhood.

When she completed her schooling and a Diploma Course as Laboratory Technician she expressed her desire to be a religious. Rev. Fr. Joseph Dhanaraj, her Parish priest introduced her to Sr. Ann Thomas fmm, who was the superior of Immaculate Conception Convent, Coimbatore. Georgina was attracted by the daily adoration, the life of St. Francis and Bl. Maria Assunta.

She entered the pre-novitiate at Kotagiri, Nilgiris on 11.07.1988, the novitiate at Bangalore on 19.05.1989 and made her first vows on 21st May 1991. After her first vows, she was missioned to Chennai province. She was sent to Sacre Coeur Convent, Tuticorin where she worked as Laboratory Technician in St. Joseph’s Leprosy Hospital. In 1993 she was sent to Child Jesus Convent to do General Nursing. She completed the Diploma in General Nursing in 1996 (Diploma as Registered Nurse Registered Midwife). After completing her General Nursing studies she served as community nurse in Stella Maris Convent, Chennai and later in St. Thomas Mercy Home, Tiruchirapalli. She did her theological studies in the year 1997 – 98. She made her Perpetual Vows at Our Lady’s Convent, Palluruthy on 28.12.1999.

Georgina completed Post Certificate B.Sc studies in 2009 and joined the College of Nursing as a tutor and after two years of teaching experience, she was sent to do M. Sc in Nursing. She completed M.Sc degree course in 2014 and rejoined the College of Nursing as tutor.

The call of God came to Georgina in a very challenging way at the age of 50 when she was diagnosed with Carcinoma of Endometrium in March 2017. She underwent surgery and chemo radiation therapy. She earnestly desired to be healed and to return to her teaching in the College of Nursing. Even on her sick bed in the hospital she took care to teach the procedures to her students.  But her disease was in progressive stage.  She was suggested palliative care by the Oncologist.

In February 2018 she expressed her desire to go to a prayer centre in Kerala to pray and to make a good confession. Her request was granted and she was taken to the prayer centre for a day’s prayer. On her return, the serenity on her face showed that she had accepted God’s plan for her to endure the illness with courage.

Georgina was in Child Jesus Hospital Intensive Care Unit for 20 days owing to her difficulty in breathing. Her condition became very critical on 15th Feb.2018. On 16th Feb. 2018 at 1.30pm she passed away owing to Cardio Respiratory Arrest while the sisters were praying and singing around her.

She accepted her pain and the discomfort of her illness cheerfully, without any complaint and with courage. She was a simple, unassuming, hardworking and zealous missionary.  She had deep faith in God and was very prayerful. Her commitment, devotion to duty and accountability were very remarkable. May her soul rest in peace!
