World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED celebration began in 1972. As the apex body of Protestant and Orthodox churches in India, NCCI is urging churches to observe June 5 as ‘Green Sunday’ in commemoration of the World Environment Day. India is hosting the celebrations for this year for which the theme is: ‘Forests: Nature at your service’.

India  has  the  seventh largest land mass on the planet, about 3.28 million square kilometers. But due to population increase, industrialization and the massive intensification of agriculture, the country faces serious environmental challenges. The problems include deforestation, pollution, loss of water resources and wildlife trade.Forests cover one third of the earth’s land mass, performing vital functions and services around the world.  In fact, 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods.  They play a key role in our battle against climate change. Forests  are  the  green lungs of the earth, vital to the survival of people everywhere -- all seven billion of us.Global deforestation continues at an alarming rate -- every year, 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed. The services forests provide are essentially to every aspect of our quality of life. And the answer to sustainable forest management, moving towards a green economy, lies in our hands

Lord, creator of the universe, You created human beings in your image as the crown of creation and gifted the abounding handiwork for their welfare. Instead of gratefully using it for our well-being we dare to misuse it for other attractive benefits. Restore good sense in us  to work  seriously  for balance and well being of the present and more for the future generations.
