The World Population Day is observed on July 11 every year to raise the awareness of people about global population issues.  In 1989, in its decision 89/46, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that, in order to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues in the context of overall development plans and programmes and the need to find solutions for these issues, 11 July should be observed by the international community as World Population Day.

Popular interest in the Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, the date on which the world's population reached five billion people, is said to have acted as the inspiration.

Since framing of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the themes of the annual event have centred around one or more of these goals. The theme of the World Population Day 2012 is “Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services”. Universal access to reproductive health by 2015 is also one of the targets of the Millennium Development Goals.

Reproductive health is at the very heart of development and crucial to delivering the UNFPA vision — a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
Reproductive health problems remain the leading cause of ill health and death for women of childbearing age worldwide. Some 222 million women who would like to avoid or delay pregnancy lack access to effective family planning. Nearly 800 women die every day in the process of giving life. About 1.8 billion young people are entering their reproductive years, often without the knowledge, skills and services they need to protect themselves. The world population on July 9, 2012, was estimated to have been 7,025,071,966.

The Lord of life chose human persons to be His co- creators. True expression of intimate love between couples is to bring forth precious life to existence. More the population can we say more is the qualitative love. Reality is very different but it can and need be bettered.

Lord, help people to be responsible parents, value and treasure life, provide better access to health services especially to the poor in the rural areas. Pray particularly for those awaiting the gift of a child and may the adopted children find happiness.

The Lord has provided in abundance for our need.

Let our greed not spoil it.
