World mental health Day-2012

RICHARD C. HUNTER, DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL OF WFMH FROM 1983 THROUGH 2002, ENVISIONED WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY AS A GLOBAL AND UNIFIED EFFORT TO PROMOTE GREATER PUBLIC AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL ILLNESS. HIS DREAM CONTINUES TO BE REALIZED EACH YEAR ON OCTOBER 10 – NOW CELEBRATED ANNUALLY AS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY IN OVER 100 COUNTRIES!

This year the theme for the World Mental Health Day is

“Depression: A Global Crisis”.

Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. It can be long-lasting or recurrent, substantially impairing an individual’s ability to cope with daily life. At its most severe, depression can lead to suicide. Depression affects more than 350 million people of all ages, in all communities. Although there are known effective treatments for depression, access to treatment is a problem in most countries and in some countries fewer than 10% of those who need it receive such treatment.

Supreme Power, Master and Lord of wholeness and well-being, we pray You to implant love and courage in all hearts to rise above strife and struggles of our time  May all who are affected in whatever degree soon find solace in the support of good and friendly neighbours who will enable them to live better lives.
