Gurupurab Greetings !Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti. 5th January.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Nanak (Sikh Guru), was born at Patna Sahib on December 22, 1666, (Poh Sudi Saptmi). His birthday generally falls in December or January or sometimes twice within a year as it is calculated according to Hindu Bikrami Calendar, which is based on the lunar calendar. According to the Nanakshahi Calendar, the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib falls annually on January 5.

In the midst of tense political situation, Guru Gobind Singh gained great stature as both Saint and soldier a leader of firm spiritual principles and intense devotion to God, and at the same time, fearless dedication to protecting all people from oppression and injustice through the practice of Kshatradharma.

Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699 to emphasize the courage of the Sikh community. When Guru Gobind Singh founded the Panth Khalsa the first five men he baptized were all from different castes, signifying that members of the Sikh community should not consider caste distinctions. Guru Gobind Singh then bade the five Panj Piaras (leaders of the Khalsa) to baptize him. . To emphasize courage over fear, he set forth five mandatory requirements for all Sikhs. (Sometimes known as the Five Ks.) The Five Ks gave the Sikh community a distinctly recognizable appearance. Guru Gobind Singh declared all male Sikhs take the surname Singh (lion)—until this point, Guru Gobind Singh was known as Guru Gobind Rai. Also, all Sikh women took the surname Kaur, meaning "princess."

Guru Gobind Singh, in his writings "Swayye in Dasam Granth" says:

Worship the one by worshiping whom
All pains and sins are removed
By remembering whom,
All physical and mental ills get moved.

Sikh Prayer of Repentance

Our transgressions are past counting,
There is no end to our sins, Be merciful, forgive us, O Lord;
We are great sinners and wrongdoers. There is no hope of our redemption.
O Lord, dear Lord, our deeds weighed in the balance would get us no place in Thy court!
Forgive us and make us one with Thyself through the grace of the Guru.
If the Lord God can be attained to, then all evil is destroyed.

May you shine like the Guru
