A New Venture in the Health Mission

Geriatric clinic-  A New Venture in the Health Mission

The United Nations International day of Older Persons is celebrated annually on October first to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine   issues that affect their lives.  Discussions are centered on topics such as: ageing populations, the provision of adequate healthcare for aged persons, volunteer work, social care, and ways to be more inclusive of older persons in the workforce. It is also intended to provide an opportunity to the younger generation to understand the contribution of the elderly in building of the society and the nation.

The society needs to recognize their resourceful experience and booster their morale that they are still potentially useful in contributing their mite to make things possible towards peace and harmony in the society.

1stOctober 2016, being the world senior citizen day, we launched the most desired Geriatric Clinic in Martalli, Karnataka with the aim of providing realistic health care service and to promote health and wellbeing among the senior citizens in this locality. We wish to make this project an eventual benchmark in the lives of the senior citizens and to reach a significant milestone in the health mission.

As part of the campaigning, we organized awareness sessions and treatment camp. The programme started with lighting of the lamp at 11 a.m. Sr. Pushpa Joseph, provincial, Sr. Dr. Emily from Ooty province, Sr. Dr.Jaqulineand a team   of doctors from  St. John’s  Medical College hospital, Bengaluru, Fr. L. Santiago the founder president of senior citizen group for Martalli region, Fr. Packiaraj ,the parish priest, Sr.Sagaya Mary and a   senior citizen representative  were present on the dais.  The speakers appreciated the valuable contributions made by the senior citizens to their families and to the society. They reminded the gathering that the present status that we enjoy is the result of the hardships and greater sacrifice of our beloved parents and elders.

About two hundred senior citizens benefitted from this rare programme. There was a sigh of relief and sign of hope on the bright faces of the elderly participants. We decided to have a clinic for the senior citizens on every first Tuesday of the month. The Day Care Centre for the senior citizens in Martalli is the pilot project of the province to promote well being through social and health related services. We are very grateful to Sr. Pushpa Joseph, provincial for encouraging and extending great support to make this event possible.
