“SAVE HUMANITY and  NURTURE NATURE”

The Nilgiris is the Queen of Hills and Ooty is known for its enchanting beauty. Tourists from all over India visit Ooty to inhale the pure air and enjoy the scenic beauty. However, the landscape is facing threat due to waste dumps at all corners and the accumulation of plastics at the waste bins left by the tourists. The irresponsible way of throwing waste adds to the filth on the streets. The one who pollutes does not care to clean up thus  destroying the ecosystem and the natural beauty of the Nilgiris.

We the members of  “Nazareth Neela” ( Widows Empowermnet) wish to affirm our Dignity and intensify our “Clean Ooty” Campaign.  We come from  (St. Mary’s Hill, Rose Mount, Bandisholai, Kandal, Lovedale, Nanjanad, Kotagiri, Lovedale, Ketti  etc…)

With this motivation we celebrated International women’s Day to intensify our drive for ‘Clean Ooty”   on 4th March 2018, at 11. 00 am at Nazareth Neela Centre.  The  theme of the day was ‘Save Humanity,  Nurture Nature’. Indeed it was a memorable day for the women as there was lot of joy, enthusiasm and new awakenings brought home to them through the programme. Around 50 women actively participated in it.

The chief guest of the function was Sr. Valsa Joseph, our provincial. She spoke about the miserable plight of women in the society especially the stigma of widows and the urgent need to empowering them. She encouraged the women to stand up for their rights with self determination.

Mr Ganesh (Retd. Teacher,Poet, member of human rights org. ,Ooty) who spoke about the reality of Mothers as care givers. He appreciated their pivotal contribution to the development of the family and society and thanked them for their selfless service.

Sr Rosily Savarimuthu fmm, through short videos,  brought out the violence against women in the family and  society. Injustice, abuse and exploitation  are faced by women  from womb to tomb. Women need to support each other for mutual empowerment as well as the cooperation of men  needed in this venture  since  we all  coexist together in society. The women’s group of Kotagiri sang an awareness song which in turn stimulated the spirit of the entire audience. There was lot of interactions and active involvement from the part of participants.

Sr Stella Baltazar fmm  emphasized on the hidden power of women and the need of empowerment of the women who are pushed back to the society. She introduced ‘safepad’ an alternative to plastic inbuilt sanitary pads to the women. This method of preparing pads with Cotton cloth is eco-friendly and avoids the hazards of the usage of plastics which is highly polluting the environment even through incinerator. She also  shared about segregation of plastic waste by collecting all plastic waste in the home and being linked to the recycling unit  in order to preserve the environment pollution free for the future generations.

A discussion was held to decide the future activities for the betterment of women, specially to eradicate the dehumanizing cultural practices for woman at the time of the death of her husband. Women actively pledged to stop the erasing of the red mark on the forehead, removal of flowers from their head and breaking of bangles. This would revolutionize the image of widows in our society.

The celebrations came to a conclusion with distribution of gifts and sumptuous meal for all.

By celebrating International Women’s Day we wish to reaffirm the “Clean Ooty” Campaign by bringing awareness  to protect our mother Earth, Water and Air: work for clean Ooty, waste segregation and disposal practice and protect the fragile Eco-system of the Nilgiris, the Queen of Hills. Let us SAVE HUMANITY and  NURTURE NATURE with CARE……..
