Social Activities for Vulnerable Individuals

Social Activities for Vulnerable Individuals

“To go to the poor is the need of my soul” – Blessed Mary of the Passion

In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, FMM Social Service Society ( FMMSSS) , the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups, particularly children, youth, and women. Amid growing social inequalities, digital divides, and online risks, we have adapted our methods and expanded our reach to promote inclusion, protection, and empowerment.  FMMSSS holds innumerable success stories of  rescuing lives , training women and making youth as ambassadors of social change The following is the one such example :

Drivers as First Responders

It was on 25th March 2025 FMMSSS organized a district-level networking and sensitization meeting aimed at empowering lorry, truck, and auto drivers to play a pivotal role in the prevention of human trafficking. The event convened over 100 participants, including drivers, union leaders, and key law enforcement officials.

Dignitaries from police department, Cyber Crimes, Anti human trafficking unit , Child  line  and Child Welfare Committee enriched the discussions, emphasizing the transport sector’s crucial role in identifying trafficking cases. The workshop unpacked various forms of trafficking — from forced labor to online sexual exploitation — and highlighted how technology, including social media, is increasingly used to recruit and exploit victims.

Participants were trained to spot warning signs, such as distressed passengers or children traveling with unrelated adults. Legal frameworks were explained, alongside vital helpline numbers: 1098 for child helpline, 100 for police, and 112 for emergencies. Drivers were urged to act as vigilant community responders, promptly reporting any suspicious activities.

A tangible outcome of this effort came on the same day  at 8.pm., when a coordinated operation by our staff, police and drivers led to the rescue of 8 children and 5 women trafficked from other states and forced into street begging. These victims were admitted to the Government One-Stop Center for rehabilitation and were successfully reintegrated with their families, thanks to swift action and collaboration.

The event concluded with renewed commitment from all stakeholders to build safer communities. FMMSSS reaffirmed its dedication to continuing awareness initiatives and strengthening partnerships to protect vulnerable populations from exploitation.

Sisters step forward in faith to uplift the marginalized in India

Inspired by their foundress, Blessed Mary of the Passion, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in India are dedicating their lives to the service of the poor and marginalized. In the St. Francis Region, the sisters primarily serve children, adults, and women by providing education, rescuing individuals from trafficking, supporting rehabilitation, and bringing hope and transformation to their lives.

By Sr. Sujitha Sudarvizhi, FMM

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were founded in 1877 by Blessed Mary of the Passion in India. She invited her sisters to be an instrument of hope, peace, joy and healing.

Today, there are almost 5,000 FMM sisters in 71 countries around the world, dedicated to education, healthcare, social justice, and pastoral care across the world.

FMM sisters serve in four regions in India, and one among them is the St. Francis Region. It includes eight north Indian states; Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, the region faces a variety of cultural, linguistic, and social challenges.

“Each region carries its unique challenges, and we try our best to respond to these differences,” said Sr. Bensy Maria Sangeetham who serves in the region. “We are involved in many mission activities, which help us to reach out to the marginalized and needy, especially to be a voice for the voiceless.”

Living among the people in 19 vibrant communities in St. Francis Region, the sisters walk with them and respond to their realities through compassion, education, and advocacy.

The sisters become a beacon of hope to the surrounding, and they do not act like outsiders. Instead, they are part of the people’s hopes, struggles, and dreams. This closeness makes them credible and prophetic witnesses of the Gospel.

Outreach program for education of women and children

FMM sisters have established one of the most vibrant social work centers in the region.

In the city of Trilokpuri, they have implemented Disha Kendra Outreach Program, with which they provide essential help and empowerment to surrounding slums and marginalized neighborhoods.

Sr. Bensy highlighted that the outreach program has helped women and children benefit in many ways, giving them a chance to build a better future in today’s world.

In response, the sisters began offering remedial classes and spoken English courses for both children and adults. They also started computer literacy and tailoring training for women and teenagers.

The sisters are encouraged by the positive response from the children, adults, and women, and this gives them hope to continue working towards transforming the community.

The outreach program empowers women by providing tailoring training

The results of the outreach programs were seen quickly. Some women got jobs in garment companies, while others started working for themselves after learning tailoring. The beneficiaries say that they have confidence and hope in their life to uplift the family and they remain grateful.

“Just as birds begin building their nests with hope and trust, we have begun this project with hope in our hearts and faith in God,” said Sr. Bency. “God is our foundation and strength, and we trust that He will sustain this mission by moving hearts and hands to support it and we are happy.”

Medical camps and protection from human trafficking

As part of these outreach programs the sisters also provide regular medical camps for access to healthcare, run awareness programs on child protection and prevention of human trafficking.

“We want to raise awareness on this area because trafficking is becoming common in some parts of North India and negligence of health leads to death especially among the children,” said Sr. Bency.

The outreach program provides children with the opportunity to learn computer literacy

Eucharist in the centre

The FMM was founded with a missionary heart to go to the ends of the earth, especially where Christ is least known and loved.

In the St. Francis Region, this charism is vibrantly alive. Here, mission is not confined to institutions; it unfolds in streets, homes, and marketplaces.

Inspired by the humility of St. Francis and the courage of Blessed Mary of the Passion, the sisters live simply and serve radically. Their mission is to accompany the people in loving service.

As written in their Constitution, the Eucharist is the centre of their life, “our participation in Christ’s sacrifice, prolonged in Eucharistic adoration, permeates our whole existence with praise, offering and intercession.”

Today, the FMM sisters continue to live the Eucharist every day, broken and shared for others, whether in the congested streets of Delhi or the woods of Jharkhand.

Theirs is an expression of love that uplifts the forgotten, giving others the courage to confront unjust systems and faith to recognize Christ in the broken.

The religious sisters are a reminder that Christ’s love is alive and active in the world through every act of compassion.

Sisters in the field visit the poor to know more about their lives

Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Social Service Society (FMMSSS):

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Social Service Society (FMMSSS), located at Immaculate Convent, Hanamkonda, Telangana, is a registered non-governmental organization belonging to the Assunta Region. With its legal standing under FCRA, FMMSSS has been actively engaged in grassroots initiatives led by the FMM sisters, focusing on the holistic development of women, youth, and children. At the heart of its mission lies a deep commitment to the protection and promotion of children’s rights.

FMMSSS functions through a dedicated office and field teams that work tirelessly to empower women, promote girl child education, and support youth development. Its interventions address pressing social issues such as the prevention of human trafficking, awareness on HIV/AIDS, and protection of the environment. The organization places special emphasis on creating safe environments for children by collaborating with government departments such as the police, women and child welfare, and labour, as well as with Child Safe Organizations (CSOs) and religious leaders.

Over the years, FMMSSS has established  parent–children clubs and initiated skill training programs for women and adolescent girls. It has been at the forefront of preventing child and human trafficking, educating orphan children, and forming Parent–Caregiver Associations. The training of Youth Ambassadors has brought about a transformative impact by mobilizing young people as advocates for change in their communities.

The Society’s strong focus on ending child marriages, trafficking, and sexual exploitation has resulted in several significant interventions, including the rescue and rehabilitation of vulnerable children. Through its wide network of community awareness programs, FMMSSS has reached families, youth, and children with education and protection initiatives, while also sensitizing officials and stakeholders to strengthen grassroots child protection systems.

Alongside child rights, FMMSSS has worked to advance women’s economic independence through Job-Oriented Vocational Training (JOVT). This initiative has provided many women with sustainable livelihood opportunities, empowering them to lead lives of dignity and resilience.

The dedication and networking efforts of FMMSSS have been widely recognized. On 15th August 2025, during the 79th Independence Day celebrations, the District Magistrate conferred upon FMMSSS the prestigious award for “Best Services to Humanity.” Receiving this honour in the presence of dignitaries, political leaders, achievers, and the general public was a moment of great pride and joy for the organization.

The Society remains ever grateful to its Regional Superior, Sr. Romaldine Rebello, and her Council for their unwavering guidance and support. Above all, FMMSSS acknowledges with deep gratitude the providence of God, whose spirit continues to inspire its mission of service.

This remarkable journey of FMMSSS reflects its enduring commitment to building safe, empowered, and resilient communities—ensuring that every woman and child has the opportunity to thrive.

All glory to God.
